Overview
The Benefits of Teen Volunteering and Extracurricular Involvement at school:
- Develops an increased sense of social responsibility—a global view of society and a heart for "giving back" and helping others.
- Exposes teens to diversity and multiculturalism.
- Provides opportunities to apply academic learning to real human needs.
- Builds relationships and "social connectedness" with peers, adults, and activists sharing a cause.
- Improves communication and critical thinking skills.
- Helps students find their passions and interests that may lead to a career choice they may not have previously considered.
- Helps develop lifelong interpersonal and communication skills.
Community service is an essential way for students to explore their interests, show colleges what they believe in, and define a possible career path. By engaging in volunteer work, teens have an opportunity to learn experientially. They discover where their passions lie while undertaking "feel good" projects that truly make a difference. These experiences allow them to make more informed choices about college and career options as well as instilling a lifelong interest in giving back. Heidebrecht, Camille. Extracurricular activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community. Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education. Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of
school failure and dropping out (Lamborn et al, 1992; Finn, 1993).
Students who meet all the requirements of a Distinguished Member of the Wolf Pack will receive:
- Special Recognition at 8th Grade Graduation - You will be honored with a gray cord and your name to be called
- MSN Legacy Wall: A plaque with name and graduation year

Volunteerism
Students must complete at least 25 hours per year. All volunteer hours must be entered by May 1st of that school year. Hours entered after May first of any year will not be accepted.
- A minimum of 25 hours for 6th grade must be entered by May 1st of 6th grade year.
- A minimum of 25 hours for 7th grade must be entered by May 1st of 7th grade year.
- A minimum of 25 hours for 8th grade must be entered by May 1st of 8th grade year.
If the student begins attending MSN in 7th or 8th grade, the number of volunteer hours will be 50 and 25 hours, respectively. However, you must note this on the DMWP Google Tracker.
Involvement
Participate in at least 4 extracurricular activities while at MSN
Participating in one activity for 3 years counts as 3 extra-curricular activities. Activities must have sustained after-school requirements, i.e. practices. For example, being in the choir would not count as an extra-curricular activity, but participating in Chamber Choir or Heart Warmers would count as an extra-curricular activity. Being in Band would not count as an extra-curricular activity, but participating in Jazz Band would count because that has regularly scheduled after-school practices and performances.
